  1. FAQs

Volunteer roles

Please note that while we are operating under Covid restrictions many of our volunteer opportunities have been paused. Please do contact our Volunteer Manager Becky at [email protected] if you have any questions.

We understand that often people lead very busy lives, also that it’s important to feel one can ‘give back’ too. We also recognise that there are many different reasons for wanting to volunteer.

Our volunteers tell us that they find their time spent with us hugely rewarding and that they are proud to be part of the team that delivers such a vital emergency medical service.

We recognise that each of our volunteers has different skills to offer, which is why we welcome volunteers in a variety of different roles in support of the charity.

Take a look at the volunteering opportunities below and see which interests you!

Trustee Roles

Express your interest in becoming one of our Trustees! Trustees are crucial to Devon Air Ambulance and ultimately contribute to helping us save lives.

Trustees are crucial to Devon Air Ambulance and ultimately contribute to helping us save lives.

It’s important that our Trustees reflect the community that Devon Air Ambulance serves.  We understand that individuals that have different experiences and backgrounds add a huge amount of value to our organisation and by having a diverse board we will be better able to make great decisions, be more innovative and creative.

DAA has been through a significant period of change in the past few years with becoming a Care Quality Commission regulated independent healthcare provider, welcoming a new H145 helicopter and two critical car cars into service in 2020, an organisational restructure, not to mention of course a pandemic that impacted every aspect of our organisation.  We continue to plan for growth and development of our service with a new Airbase and HQ in the early stages of development.  To find out more on this please click here.

We are looking for someone who can support our journey, be a critical friend and help shape our organisation to be fit for the future.

We are an organisation that embraces technology and it forms one of our key strategic pillars (click here for access to the Strategic Plan) so it’s essential that applicants are familiar with or able to learn how to use Microsoft Teams and standard Office software to a reasonable level.

What can a Trustee expect from Devon Air Ambulance?

  • Training – our Trustees receive an induction and then a phased training programme including governance and finance training. Some training may be role specific.
  • Trustee Buddy
  • Skills development – you can expect to develop the following skills in your role as a Trustee: critical thinking, strategic planning, good governance practice, charity sector and health service provider experience.

How to Apply

Please send an expression of interest no more than one side of A4 giving us details about you as a person, any relevant qualifications or experience and, importantly, what you feel you can bring to the board and what you are looking for from us!  Please refer to the Trustee Application Pack for further information on expectations of a Trustee.

Expressions of interest are to be sent to [email protected] by Wednesday 8th June 2022.

A Trustee shall be selected without regard to sex, race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origins, marital status, gender orientation and religious beliefs in accordance with the organisations Equal Opportunities policy.

If you would like to have an informal chat to find out what life as a Trustee of DAA is like please contact [email protected] and we will organise a suitable time for you to speak with Margaret Davies – Chair of Trustees to find out more information.

Shop volunteer roles

If you like working with the public and helping to keep our shops customer-ready and beautiful, we welcome volunteers at our charity shops across Devon.

Expand

Devon Air Ambulance is grateful to our amazing community of volunteers, who help to keep our high street charity shops open and our crews delivering life-saving specialist care.

The great thing about volunteering in our retail shops is that we have a role to suit everyone, whether you are a student or retired, an outgoing type or someone who likes to work behind the scenes.

As with all volunteering roles, you can choose where, when and for how long you would like to volunteer.

Volunteer as a box collector

We always welcome volunteers to help services some of the hundreds of donation boxes located across the county.

Expand

We are currently looking to recruit volunteer box collectors in and around the county.

As a volunteer you would be given a list of charity collection boxes to empty, bank the contents and replace around two to three times a year. This is an incredibly flexible way to support us as you can work around your other commitments, calling at your locations when it is convenient to you.

Help in our offices

There are plenty of ways to help at our Exeter office

Expand

We have several volunteering opportunities at our head office based in Pinhoe, Exeter. You might like to help us on reception welcoming our visitors, support with various admin in our different departments or help us to prepare for our three largest fundraising events. Occasionally, we also need help in our counting room where collection boxes from fundraisers around the county are returned to us to process. Some of our head office volunteers have gone on to secure permanent roles with us and are still working with us decades later!

Attend events & promote the work of the charity

There are many opportunities to talk to people about our charity

Expand

Especially in the Spring and Summer months there are many different fundraising events taking place throughout Devon.  Helping to run a stall alongside other volunteers can be great fun and a pleasant day out meeting people and talking to them about our life saving service.  This all helps to spread the word and promote the work that we do.

Give talks

Do you enjoy holding the attention of an audience?

Expand

You don’t have to be a great speechwriter to deliver one of our talks, just someone who is interested in being an ambassador for the charity. Talks are often requested by small community groups, as well as schools. Our volunteers take along an interesting and informative PowerPoint presentation that helps to promote our work, encourage support from local people and raise money.  Although everyone has their own style, initially we will always buddy you up with an existing speaker to help you to see how the presentation can be delivered.

Support our main fundraising events as a One-Off event volunteer

Help out at one of our three biggest annual events

Expand

We host 3 high-profile events each year on a pretty large scale and these require the support of many volunteers.  You may be an existing volunteer who would like to get involved or join us as a One-off Event Volunteer.  Events are great fun and popular with the public, so it’s a great way to support the charity in a lively and informal setting. Our 3 biggest events are:

  • Motorcycle Ride Out
  • Dragon Boat Festival
  • Royal Marines Commando Challenge

Drive our van between shops to deliver stock

Here's a great way to get out and about while volunteering

Expand

We are often in need of keen drivers' mates to help move our stock donations between our 19 shops on a weekly basis.  Because our shops are like a community hub, you might also take along collection buckets and display banners for people holding fundraising events for us.

By travelling around the county, you will meet a lot of people. If you have some spare time, like being out and about and prefer not to stay in one place for too long, this is the ideal volunteering role for you!
