Why volunteer?

Our volunteers are fantastic people who donate their skills and time to support Devon Air Ambulance.

Our volunteers are at the heart of our fundraising efforts and the foundation of our charity, helping us stay closely connected to the communities we serve. Volunteering with Devon Air Ambulance is a chance to do something meaningful — supporting a life-saving service, connecting with others, developing valuable skills and making a positive difference across Devon, all in a way that works for you.

Volunteering with Devon Air Ambulance is a brilliant way to meet people and feel part of something bigger. Whether you’re helping in one of our charity shops, supporting events, sharing your creativity, or speaking to community groups, our roles are designed to fit around real lives.

You’ll work alongside people from all walks of life, united by a shared purpose and many volunteers tell us the friendships they make are one of the best parts of volunteering with us.

Volunteering isn’t just about giving time, it’s also about growing. Our volunteers develop valuable, transferable skills such as teamwork, communication, organisation and customer service, all of which are highly regarded by employers.

Giving your time freely also says a lot about you. It shows commitment, compassion and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. For those volunteering in our charity shops, there’s even the opportunity to gain an NVQ in Retail or Customer Service.

Volunteering is proven to boost wellbeing, confidence and self-esteem and it’s easy to see why. Working together towards a shared goal, staying active, and knowing your time matters can be incredibly rewarding.

Our volunteers often tell us that volunteering gives them focus, structure and a sense of purpose, whether they’re learning something new or putting existing skills to good use.

Devon Air Ambulance is an independent charity and receives no government funding. Every mission we fly is made possible by the generosity of supporters and the dedication of our volunteers.

By giving your time, you’re helping us reach people in the most critical moments — when land ambulances can’t get there quickly enough and every second counts. Many of our volunteers have a personal connection to the charity, including former patients who want to give something back.

Volunteering with Devon Air Ambulance means knowing that your contribution, however big or small, helps save lives across the county. It also brings that unmistakable “warm glow” of doing something genuinely worthwhile for your community and for yourself, as one of our volunteers describes.

We value every volunteer and the time, energy and care they bring. Together, we help ensure that when Devon needs us most, we’re there.
