Devon Heli Hike 2026 is set to be bigger and bolder this year! This challenging 6, 14 or 26 mile hike will take participants through Devon’s most breathtaking landscapes, from rolling hills to stunning coastal paths. It’s a test of endurance, but it’s all in the name of saving lives and we need an incredible team of volunteers to support our walkers every step of the way.
When
Saturday, 4 July 2026
We anticipate needing our first volunteers from 6:00am, with the final shifts wrapping up around 8:00pm. Each shift is expected to last between 4 to 6 hours, depending on your role and location along the route.
Where
Bigbury, South Devon
Volunteer roles
Route Marshalls – Cheer on walkers, guide them along the route, and ensure everyone stays safe.
Water Station Crew – Keep participants hydrated and motivated at key checkpoints.
Your role is simple but powerful: cheering on hikers, offering encouragement, sharing a smile, and being part of a supportive team in one of the most beautiful settings on the South West Coast Path.
Things were really well organised. Good communications ahead of time and throughout. I was impressed with the scale. Many local residents have commented to me about this. Thank you to everyone who was kind, open, interested and enthusiastic. Your people are your greatest asset! I enjoyed meeting other volunteers and DAAT/Gladiator staff.
Teresa – local one-off event volunteer
Important info
Volunteering at Heli Hike is flexible, relaxed, and genuinely enjoyable.
- You can choose a half-day or full-day shift
- You’ll be based at a designated post — you can bring a folding chair (no standing all day!)
- You’ll be fed and watered, and
- Expenses are covered in line with our volunteer expenses policy
Some sections of the route will be remote, uneven, and exposed to the elements – while it’s hard to predict British weather, July can bring hot and sunny days, so please keep all of the above in mind when signing up.
A full event briefing will take place prior to the event.
Why volunteer?
Volunteering, even for just a few hours, has a powerful effect, not just on those you’re supporting, but on your own wellbeing too. Giving your time to a cause like Devon Air Ambulance fosters a sense of purpose and connection, boosting self-esteem and reducing stress.
By joining us at Devon Heli Hike 2026, you’ll be part of a positive, uplifting experience, surrounded by like-minded people, fresh air, and an incredible atmosphere. It’s a chance to step away from daily routines, meet new friends, and make a real difference, all while cheering on walkers as they take on their challenge. Your energy and encouragement will keep participants motivated, your presence at water stations will keep them going, and at the finish line, you’ll see first-hand the impact of your support.
Even one day of volunteering strengthens community spirit, inspires others, and helps create lasting change. Whether you volunteer solo, with family, or as part of a team, you’ll leave with new memories, a huge sense of achievement, and the knowledge that you’ve played a part in saving lives.
- Your time directly contributes to saving lives and making a real difference
- Cheer hikers on as they go the extra mile
- Be part of an uplifting, emotional day
- Put something different in the diary for 2026
- Bring a friend or family member along with you
This event is a huge moment for us, and we need every pair of hands possible to make it a success. This is a fantastic opportunity to invite friends, family and colleagues to get involved and support DAA! There’s no long-term commitment, just a chance to be a part of something special for a great cause.
