Your questions answered

To tackle the Postbridge Challenge, you need to be comfortable with a challenging hike as you may encounter uneven ground, stiles, and some steep ascents. You will need the right equipment too: sturdy walking boots and  weather-ready gear. Though the route will be staffed at various check-in points, basic navigation skills, a compass and a map are beneficial.

You’ll need the level of fitness required to walk for over an hour over variable terrain.

Your general fitness should allow you to walk challenging routes for up to two hours.

There will be marshalls along the route at every check point to help, but basic route reading skills are required.

Marshalls are available at various check-in points where first aid will be available. Radios across the route allow networked communications between event officials. Be aware that mobile signal is intermittent across Dartmoor, though 999 will connect.

Organisers will review the weather close to the event and if a weather warning is issued then the event will be cancelled no later than the night before. If the weather is only wet then it’s a case of dressing for the weather!

Be aware the terrain is often muddy, rocky and uneven and may become more challenging in the event of wet weather.

The event is in March, so warm layers, a warm hat, a waterproof jacket and trousers, and sturdy footwear is advisable. In case we are lucky enough for it to be a bright day then a cap, sunglasses and sun cream is also worth packing.

A map, a compass, torch, food, water and a whistle are also advisable.

There will be toilets available at the car park. The car park is Bellever Forest Car Park, Main Forestry Commission Car Park, Bellever, SX656773.

Please be aware that there is no water refill facility, so be sure to pack enough for your challenge. It is not possible to reach the start point via public transport.

Please seek to keep a sensible distance from wild animals like ponies and livestock on the moors. Well-behaved dogs are welcome but should be kept on leads. Please stick to the designated paths on the route. Don’t pick any flowers of grasses and leave no litter behind.

If you are unwell while on the route or can’t continue, please contact the event control number in your participants’ pack. In an emergency contact 999.

First aid is available at the marshalled stops. Please disclose medical conditions at the point of sign up.

We are expecting 100-200 walkers for the Postbridge Challenge. Don’t worry if you walk slower than other walkers, just as long as you don’t begin the walk after the cut-off time. For the 10-mile route the cut-off time for the finish will be 4pm. There will also be a cut off time at the forest corner GR643772 of 14:30 when all walkers, arriving after this time, will be asked to make their way to Bellever Forest car park via the footpath to the east through the forest, then the road. Friends and family members are also welcome.

The walk promises beautiful views across Dartmoor and Tors such as the beautiful Bellever Tor. There is no shortage of photo opportunities that are most picturesque. look forward to an enjoyable, challenging day in one of Devon’s most beautiful settings and enjoy the camaraderie along the way!
