Zalan’s moorland nightmare

Patient stories
Young Zalan in hospital

Young Zalan’s family day out went awry when he encountered the local wildlife up close…

On a beautiful Saturday morning in Torquay, Zalan, just 4 years old, was with his family at the stunning Haytor Rocks on Dartmoor. But what should have been a peaceful day exploring the natural beauty of the national park quickly turned into a nightmare.

Zalan’s mum, Zsanett, had always taught her children to respect the wildlife that calls Dartmoor home. As they arrived at the car park, they spotted a few wild horses nearby and Zsanett reminded her children to stay close and speak softly around the horses.

In a split second, as the family were preparing for their walk, young Zalan strayed a little too close to the horses and one of them was spooked. In an instant, serenity turned to chaos and the startled horse kicked out, its powerful leg making contact with Zalan’s face.

I ran to my son, screaming for someone to call the ambulance. All I could think about was stopping the bleeding. Then I saw the deep gash on his lip and chin. It was every parent’s worst nightmare and it happened so quickly.

In the panic of the moment, Zsanett’s friend dialled 999. ‘She was so calm and did everything for us as well,’ said Zsanett. While we were waiting for the ambulance a few people came to us to ask if we needed any help.

‘A kind woman gave us a towel to use to stop the bleeding and a another lady calmed my daughter down while I couldn’t be with her and she was in a big panic’.

Within moments, the unmistakable red Critical Care Car of Devon Air Ambulance arrived, bringing with it a sense of hope amidst the horror. The paramedics, trained for these emergencies, quickly took over, assessing Zalan’s condition.

Zalan, understandably terrified and shaken, was unable to open his eye when paramedics inspected his injuries. This raised concerns that the trauma may have caused more serious damage, possibly to his brain. Zalan was airlifted to Torbay Hospital, where doctors immediately prepared for an MRI scan.

Rest and recovery

Thankfully the scan revealed that there was no brain injury, though Zalan still faced a difficult recovery as he went underwent surgery to repair his broken lips, remove damaged teeth, and fix the deep cuts on his chin.

Thanks to the quick response of Devon Air Ambulance, Zalan was able to return home to his family to rest and recover. What started as a day of family fun ended as a reminder of how quickly things can change.

Zsanett, overwhelmed with gratitude, expressed her appreciation: ‘We’re so thankful to the incredible team at Devon Air Ambulance. Everyone was so nice. They were brilliant and kept us calm. I really am grateful.’

As Zalan continues to heal, his family is reminded of the bravery and expertise that helped save his life, and the vital role of Devon Air Ambulance across the county.
