It’s a bit nippy, so staying snug remains a priority for most of us in the UK before we eventually go into the brighter, milder days of spring.
You can feel better prepared this winter by securing your stock of cosy cardigans, luxury cashmere sweaters, knitted scarves and quality outdoor garments that will help to keep out the winter chill.
How to stay warm this winter
Wrapping up in blankets and piling on the hot water bottles is fine if you’re indoors, and during times of economic crisis heating the person rather than the room makes sound financial sense.
But how about clothing? Fabrics like merino wool are celebrated as being naturally ‘moisture wicking’ and breathable. A fabric with a moisture wicking quality enables moisture to move through the fabric, helping it to evaporate through the surface. This helps prevent moisture from cooling on the skin and chilling the wearer. This is important when one can build up body warmth through movement which cools down when that activity stops.
Such fabrics often come with a hefty price-tag when bought new from an ethical supplier, but thankfully our shops often currently stock various pre-loved merino wool items for much less, but these garments are popular, so be quick to find a new-to-you quality garment to wrap up in.
How effective are layers in the winter?
Dressing effectively for the winter is all about good layering. While a chunky knitted jumper is a classic wardrobe staple, especially fisherman’s jumpers which are made to be very warm and to last and don’t require a lot of washing to retain the classic wintertime aesthetic, layering is also a practical way to stay snug and transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.
First put on a thermal base layer, followed by a thin fleece mid-layer ahead of your thicker outer layers (your gillet, body warmer, jacket or coat) to prepare for cooler temperatures and adapt to being indoors to face the January and February blasts.
Will clothes dry in cold weather?
The UK is a particularly wet country, during the winter months especially. Here in Devon, where our service operates, we’re well familiar with what the Atlantic throws at us.
At such times it’s not unusual for clothes to get sodden due to a cloudburst and it’s especially hard sometimes to find enough places to hang your washing indoors once the wet weather has set in.
If the washing line is out of the question, then a heated clothes drier is a great investment, helping the moisture to evaporate efficiently without smothering all your radiators with piles of clothes and blocking the heat from your room.
Obviously, this creates the issue of releasing moisture into the air which can in turn make your home colder and more damp. Getting hold of a dehumidifier can also help to alleviate that problem and keep your atmosphere healthy.
Care for your clothes and they will care for you
Keep in mind that when washing fabrics like cashmere and merino, special washing and drying instructions may apply, such as handwashing or drying an item flat. It’s well worth looking after these quality textiles by obeying the care instructions closely, even if you have managed to snag a bargain on our site. The care you put into your garments will mean they will take good care of you for winters to come.
