The Plymouth yacht race, The Eddystone Pursuit, has raised around £750,000 in sponsorship for over 130 good causes since its inception in 2002.

This year, Devon Air Ambulance is encouraging sea-faring supporters to get on-board with the 2019 ‘fun chase to fund raise’ event, by choosing to sponsor Devon’s two air ambulances.

Last year a fleet of some 65 boats sailed the 26-mile course from Plymouth Sound to Eddystone Lighthouse and back. This year’s event takes place on Saturday 15 June and will once more attract crews of all ages and yachts of all types and sizes. The event’s ethos is very much on participation, so a points handicap is permitted for boats of different speeds.

Race founder, Julia Creeke, expressed her enthusiasm for the skippers and crews that generate such successful charity fundraising every year.

I am so delighted that my mother’s settlement has led to such a popular annual fundraising event… the sailing world is not just for the rich and privileged.

Yacht skippers are urged to register as early as possible to secure additional points. Points are also awarded for the sponsorship sums teams raise for their chosen charity, as well as for their performance on the day. Aggregated points entitle a yacht to a share of the £20,000 prize pot, courtesy of this year’s race sponsors.

Devon Air Ambulance Fundraising and Communications Director, Caroline Creer said:

We’d love to inspire some of the teams in this year’s race to represent us as this exciting event. Participants must choose a charity that ‘benefits the human condition’, and with 1107 patients attended by us last year alone, we understand the valuable impact such sponsorship can mean to those who need our emergency care.
