Selling databases is bad practice

Good governance and transparency are the cornerstones of running a charity which relies on public donations according to Heléna Holt, Chief Executive of Devon Air Ambulance Trust (DAAT).

Her comments come on the back of the latest revelations about some charities selling on their supporters’ personal data to other fund-raising organisations as well as some more predatory businesses.

She said: “The people of Devon fund Devon’s two emergency helicopters and have the right to know how we raise that money and we have very strict policies on how we go about this.

“It is important for DAAT and other charitable organisations that are...

- By Jen How of Visit Dartmoor

For many people the thought of a holiday in the great outdoors, surrounded by stunning views and vast open spaces is something they look forward to all year, so a few simple safety measures whilst walking or riding on Dartmoor will mean that your trip is memorable for all the right reasons!

Please take good care to check the weather for Dartmoor National Park at http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast, and if you are planning to be out on the North Moor, also check for military firing times https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/dartmoor-firing-programme

Plan your route carefully, allowing plenty of daylight hours to complete it, and let someone know what...

Five days under the wing

By Emma Gill, Somerset Wildlife Trust

Over the past few weeks, I have had the pleasure of spending five days on secondment with Devon Air Ambulance Trust (DAAT) – a bit of a change from my usual role as Head of Membership Support Services at Somerset Wildlife Trust.

The purpose of my visit has been to look at what the two very different local charities have in common, and how we can share ideas to help each other raise awareness and funds for our respective causes.  A lot has been crammed into five days, with a whistle stop tour of...

Anita Newcombe, DAAT’s Chair of Trustees said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this award.  It is a...

IAM National Observer, Insititute of Advanced Motorists

Advanced Riding as a title is often open to misinterpretation. What makes the difference between an Advanced rider and a “standard” one, for example a rider that has just passed their Part-II DSA test and is now legally entitled to ride without “L” plates? Is it pure speed? Is it machine control under on-road and off-road conditions? Is it being able to “get your knee down” around bends? Believe it or not, it is none of these things.

The IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) and RoSPA (Royal Society...

Its National Volunteers Week Next Week

The Devon Air Ambulance Trust are planning many exciting events to celebrate Volunteers’ Week this year.

Volunteer Coordinator Rosey Oakes said “We have hundreds of volunteers beavering away across the county and they play a crucial role in keeping our two helicopters flying.  National Volunteers’ Week is an opportunity to say thank you to them – so we’re having tea parties, special window displays and a special  invitation-only visit to our Airbase to meet the crew!

We are always looking for new volunteers and currently need people to help in various roles across Devon.  Every volunteer is invaluable to us, so if...
