£475 was raised for Devon Air Ambulance when over fifty cyclists from across England and Wales gathered over the weekend of 23rd – 24th April 2016 to ride the Turf n Surf Cylce series.
The event, now in its fifth successful year, consists of three cycle routes spanning the Devon hills and Cornish coastline, covering distances of 100k, 300k and 400k. This April riders were able to enjoy excellent conditions of blue skies and sunshine, which enabled this year’s fastest rider, Nick Jackson from Cambridge, to speed through the challenging 400k route in just 20hr25. This year, Connor Dow of South Devon became the youngest person at just 15 years old to finish the 100k in only 7hrs.
The successful event is run by family and friends of Chris Bennett; a local barrister and keen cyclist who sadly died on his bike in 2012. At the time that Chris tragically lost his life he had just finished designing the 300k route; now the events are held in his memory and all proceeds go to helping others in similar crisis through donation to Devon Air Ambulance.
Chris’ daughter and event organiser Frankie said “These events are such an apt and positive way to remember our Dad. We know he’d be really chuffed to see so many people enjoying cycling a landscape he loved and giving back to a service that nearly saved his life.”
Devon Air Ambulance are extremely grateful to all the cyclists who took part and to the event organisers for once again choosing to support the charity. Fundraising Director Caroline Creer stated “We are so pleased that Chris’ family have been able to create such a positive event following their sad loss. The Turf n Surf cycle series is a wonderful way for Chris’ family to honour his memory and we are so grateful for their continued support, which enables us to continue developing our service. We look forward to supporting the event again next year.”
The Turf n Surf team are delighted to see the event grow each year and welcome new riders to take part in 2017, which will be held on the weekend of 22nd – 23rd April, full details of the event can be found on the Audax UK website; anyone can become a temporary member for just £2. Alternatively you can follow Turf n Surf on Facebook or email the Turf n Surf team. Be sure to spread the word to your two-wheeled friends!
