Captain Rob Mackie retires from flying

This week saw the end of an era for Devon’s Air Ambulances, with the final operational flight flown by Captain Rob Mackie, before he retires.

One constant at Devon Air Ambulance (DAA) over its 23 years of operation is Rob, who has flown with the service since April 1993. He is thought to be the longest serving Air Ambulance pilot working at one single service in the UK. In fact during his time with DAA he has flown in excess of 7,000 missions!

Paignton born Rob started his flying career as an Army pilot and the skills he picked up flying Scout...

Five days under the wing

By Emma Gill, Somerset Wildlife Trust

Over the past few weeks, I have had the pleasure of spending five days on secondment with Devon Air Ambulance Trust (DAAT) – a bit of a change from my usual role as Head of Membership Support Services at Somerset Wildlife Trust.

The purpose of my visit has been to look at what the two very different local charities have in common, and how we can share ideas to help each other raise awareness and funds for our respective causes.  A lot has been crammed into five days, with a whistle stop tour of...
