Ashley's Story

On Friday 8th July, 4 year old Ashley was on his way home from his nursery by school bus, when he was taken ill.

The prompt actions of Barry, his coach driver, saved his life!

Barry, from Bideford is a coach driver for Hills Coaches, who are contracted by Devon County Council to provide school transport in North Devon.

He was alerted there was something wrong with Ashley, who by now was convulsing.   He immediately stopped the bus, which had just passed the second Devon Air Ambulance base at Belle Vue Airfield, which is near Great Torrington and noting Ashley's condition, carefully carried him off the bus to the Air Ambulance base.

Ashley was examined and given emergency treatment.  He was immediately flown to the North Devon Hospital in Barnstaple, where he was diagnosed with tonsillitis and a high temperature - which had caused the convulsions.

Anne-Marie, Ashley's mum said  "Barry acted so quickly.  We have spoken to him to thank him.  He certainly saved Ashley's life."

Councillor Brian Greenslade, Leader of Devon County Council says "What a hero.  Thanks to Barry's rapid response, Ashley had the best

treatment immediately and we are all pleased to hear he is safe and able to be back at home on Saturday."

"This life-saving incident just shows the value of the second Air Ambulance being based in North Devon and we wish it was here all year round."

Barry modestly said  "I only did what any other person would do.  The best tonic of the lot was when Ashley and his mum rang me and I spoke to Ashley who said he was fine."

David Hearn, Barry's boss added "Barry is a very conscientious driver and we are extremely proud of him."

Just a week later Barry, Ashley and his mum got together and visited the airbase.

This one story demonstrates the second helicopter in North Devon has truly made a difference and proved its worth!
