DAAT has been inundated by calls since Childrens Air Ambulance started canvassing extensively locally both in general and with regard to their lottery. They have also been urging local businesses to take their collection boxes.

Heléna Holt, Chief Executive of DAAT said: "In the past we have had problems from various organisations and individuals relating to things like bogus charity bag and box collectors. I do stress that Childrens Air Ambulance is a legitimate charity and obviously people are free to support whatever charity or good cause they choose. However, I would also like to reiterate that DAAT serves the whole community of Devon and this of course includes babies and children whom we attend to on a regular basis, both from the scene of an accident or when ill, and transfers from one hospital to another, if they need specialist treatment urgently.

"We have had many calls from our supporters all over Devon confused by being approached by the Childrens Air Ambulance. They are then contacting us to check where the money is going and whether they are actually supporting the Air Ambulance that serves their community daily. I want to clarify that Childrens Air Ambulance is in no way connected to DAAT, nor does it fund us or the childrens transfers we undertake in anyway.
Locals at St Austell Brewerys Ring of Bells in Fore Street, Bishopsteignton, had the chance to enjoy a moment of fame when licensee Martin Thornhill came up with the idea of a Calendar Boys for his pool team to raise money for the Devon Air Ambulance Trust. Word quickly spread around the village and soon there was no shortage of volunteers, all keen to part with their clothes off for a good cause.

Licensee Martin commented, We had more people who wanted to be involved than we had months available which was surprising! Alan Cooper, one of our locals, arranged for the printing and just nine days after the photographs were taken a calendar appeared. So far we have sold over 250 calendars at £4.99 each. Anyone wishing to buy one should contact us at the pub.

Dwayne Peace, St Austell Brewerys local representative commented further We always encourage our pubs to raise funds for charities although this is one of the most unusual ways we have for some time. However, it is an excellent cause and we are delighted it has proved to be so popular.

Fundraising Director for Devon Air Ambulance Trust, Caroline Creer, added, We are always amazed at the innovative ideas people come up with to raise funds to keep our two helicopters flying, and the Bishop Boys in the Buff calendar is certainly one of the more creative ideas. Our thanks to all the participants and to everyone who supports the Trust by buying a calendar.

A Bit of a Do took place at the Ilsington Country House Hotel on Friday 25 November in support of Devon Air Ambulance Trust, raising just over £3,830 for the charity.

The event, jointly organised by the Ilsington Country House Hotel, The Rugglestone Inn, The Star Inn and Charles Steevenson Wines, saw the 92 guests entertained by local singer Ruthie B and enjoy a spectacular three course meal in the beautiful setting of the Ilsington Country House Hotel. Fierce bidding ensued for some of the fantastic prizes, which had been kindly donated by, amongst others, South Wales Police, the Co-operative Membership, First Great Western, Cross Country Trains, Essential Adventure and Lasting Impressions.

The organisers were thrilled with the support from the local community for A Bit of a Do; the first of what is hoped will become an annual dinner in support of Devon charities.

Speaking on behalf of the organising committee, Richard Palmer of the Rugglestone Inn said After a year of fundraising events in aid of the Devon Air Ambulance Trust, we continue to be amazed at the generosity and support of our local community. We would like to thank everyone who donated prizes for both the auction and the raffle and also all those who joined us on the night. We couldnt do this without their support and we look forward to welcoming them to next years fundraising events.

The first event this team are planning in 2012, will again raise funds for the Devon Air Ambulance Trust. The Jurassic Coast Challenge will involve teams from The Rugglestone Inn at Widecombe in the Moor and The Star Inn at Liverton taking on a cycle ride from Widecombe in the Moor to Rusper in Sussex in April.

Heléna Holt, Chief Executive of Devon Air Ambulance Trust, was among the guests who partied the night away. My friends and I all enjoyed a great evening at A Bit of a Do and extend grateful thanks to the organisers for their fantastic efforts and achievements, and to everyone who came along.
Devon Air Ambulance Trust are pleased to be working once again with Exeter City Football Club this Christmas and New Year.

At the Exeter City FC verses Yeovil Town match on 2 January 2012 the Charity will be sending its Christmas helpers to St James Park to relieve fans of their unwanted Christmas gifts prior to the match.

Caroline Creer, Fundraising Director of Devon Air Ambulance Trust said We know that sometimes in the Christmas rush, Santa gets it a bit wrong! If he brings you more socks than a centipede could need, or Christmas jumper not quite to your taste or another bottle of aftershave, why not return it to him and help us raise vital funds for Devon Air Ambulance Trust.

She added Of course, it may be that you receive everything you wished for but now you need to clear some space in the cupboard? Whichever way your Christmas goes, if you have something you would like (discreetly of course) to give back, Santas Elves will be at the entrances to St James Park at Stadium Way, St James Road and Well Street from 12 noon.

Of course you dont have to be going to the football match to pop along and donate your items, it might be that you are just in the area.

The Charity will be able to raise vital funds from the unwanted gifts by selling your items in their charity shops throughout the county and raising essential funds to keep Devons Air Ambulances flying.

If you cant make the game but have gifts that you would like to donate, you can drop them off at any of our shops, in Exeter (St Thomas, Heavitree or Topsham), Newton Abbot, Plymouth, Exmouth, Tiverton, Honiton and Barnstaple.

You can stay in touch with the latest news on the Charity via their facebook page Devon Air Ambulance Trust or by following them on twitter @DevonAirAmb.

Long term celebrity supporter Jennie Bond has well and truly come up trumps again for Devon Air Ambulance Trust. Jennie, who lives in Devon with her husband Jim appeared on the celebrity version of the popular The Chase game show last weekend.

Jennie has never been backward at coming forward in raising funds for the Charity she feels passionate about. This has varied from eating fish eyes and being buried in a coffin full of rats in Im a Celebrity Get me Out of Here!, to putting herself through general knowledge hell on quiz shows such as Celebrity Family Fortunes, and more lately The Chase.

Jennie said: The great thing about being in the public eye is to be able to appear on game shows such as The Chase and support the charities that are important to me, my family and friends. I was incredibly stupid on this latest show but, thanks to the rest of the team, I came away with £20,000 for Devon Air Ambulance Trust “ which makes it all worthwhile!

Heléna Holt, Chief Executive of Devon Air Ambulance Trust said: On behalf of everyone at Devon Air Ambulance Trust I would like to say a big thank you to Jennie for her continued support, which is very much appreciated and congratulate her and the rest of the celebrity team who appeared on The Chase. To be able to raise the profile of the Charity on national tv, as well as receiving such a big cash donation really does make a huge difference.

If you were out and about in Southdown Woods near Torrington last Sunday, 6th November, you may well have witnessed teams of army cadets competing in a laser game tournament for their annual C Company Charity Challenge.

Over 80 young cadets, supported by 12 adult instructors and Survival Laser Games staff, faced each other in a number of different scenarios throughout the woods. Their challenges required teamwork and communication skills in order to become the champions and lift the trophy.

The teams are from across North Devon and all are collecting sponsorship to raise funds for Devon Air Ambulance Trust. Event Director, Staff Sergeant Jim Harvey explains, Supporting local good causes is part of the cadets Citizenship Training and Cadet in the Community participation, which is actively encouraged within the Army Cadet Force (ACF). Devon Air Ambulance Trust is a fantastic service assisting people in distress all across the county and C Company are pleased to offer support to the good work it does.

Caroline Creer, Fundraising Director for Devon Air Ambulance Trust, said We are very grateful to all the ACF participants in this weekends Charity Challenge and to Survival Laser Games for providing the venue and equipment at a subsidised rate. Community fundraising and sponsorship events such as this are vital to the Trust and help us keep the two Air Ambulances airborne.

One single retail outlet that deserves particular thanks and recognition is the Spar at North Tawton, a small rural town nestling just north of the A3072 in mid-Devon between Okehampton and Crediton. Local residents and staff of the Spar in the High Street have long supported Devon Air Ambulance Trust and happily donated their spare coins in the box at every opportunity. In addition to the loose change that is donated, canny staff have also asked for donations to the Trust when shoppers request a plastic carrier bag, suggesting 5p or 10p depending on the strength and quality of the bag. The upshot is that monies raised by the Spar at North Tawton have now topped a whopping £10,000!

Manager, Andrew McGarvie, explained, We started this initiative back in 2008 when the Government suggested plastic bags should be sold not just given away. We realised that it was a brilliant way to help our chosen charity and we are amazed and delighted that we have been able to raise such significant funds for Devon Air Ambulance Trust by such a simple idea. It also appeals to the green ethics of our company and, by default, because our customers will also re-use the bags, it has actually saved the number of bags we buy in.

Fundraising Director for Devon Air Ambulance Trust, Caroline Creer, said This is such a fantastic example of community fundraising. The Spar at North Tawton is a well-used, popular community shop and the people of the town have really risen to the challenge of fundraising for the Trust. It just goes to show how those few odd pennies really add up; we cant thank everyone enough.

Devon Air Ambulance Trust was included in this distribution and received a donation of £750 to help in funding the Air Ambulance service. Caroline Creer, Fundraising Director for Devon Air Ambulance Trust said, We are very grateful to Devonshire Freemasons for this generous donation. We need to raise in the region of £4.5 million every year to keep the helicopters flying and community fundraising is absolutely vital to the Trust. This support is very much appreciated.

The Provincial Grand Master, Right Worshipful Brother Michael Penny commented, Whilst the individual sums may seem modest, we know that each donation is meaningful and appreciated by the charity or local organisation concerned. I am delighted that the Freemasons in Devon are able to contribute to local causes. Many of these organisations are run on a shoestring by volunteers and these donations provide real benefit.

The donations come from the William Alexander Kneel Endowment (WAKE) Fund which is currently worth approximately £1.5M. It is a charitable fund which has been accumulated by legacies and donations from Devonshire Freemasons and their families. Each year approximately £50,000 is distributed amongst local charities and organisations in Devon. The programme commenced in 2001 and since that date nearly £350,000 has been donated to nearly 400 beneficiaries.

A novel fundraising idea was hatched at the end of a busy evening last April in The Butterleigh Inn near Cullompton and now, six months later, a fantastic sum of money has been raised for two well known charities.
For at least the last six months, hosts Matthew and Jo Gorton, along with two regular customers at the pub, have been abstaining from a hair cut or any form of trim to raise funds for Devon Air Ambulance Trust and Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Matt (50) and Jo (46) have now gone for over a year since their wedding in 2010 without proper hairdos. Two of their customers, Morris Davey (68), now retired but well known for his work as an Inspector with the Police Special Constabulary in Tiverton, and Jack Hunt (72) now retired from farming, have both undertaken the full 6 month period and now display distinguished silver mops on top. All the male participants previously sported respectable short styles, as befitting gentlemen of a certain age. Jo, Matt explains, just sported a certain style of her own..! Now they are all positively hirsute and about to reach the end of the challenge and return to respectability again.

The end of the fundraiser is to be in the form of an en masse haircut at the pub early in the evening at a Halloween party on Saturday 29 October, with more fundraising and an announcement of the anticipated final total sum raised.

Matt Gorton, Landlord of The Butterleigh Inn explained, It was always intended to be novelty fundraising event rather than a serious pursuit, and has really captured the interest of much of the local community. The sum raised via sponsorship, donations and a barbecue marking our third anniversary at the Inn is expected to be in excess of £1000 and may even hit as much as £1500, to be split equally between Devon Hair Ambulance and Marie Curie Cancer Hair, both of which have touched local lives during the past few years. Locals and guests in our B&B have given generous support whilst watching the hair growth. This support is demonstrated in the final sum we anticipate raising, and I thank everyone for their kindness in donating to these two great charities.

On behalf of Devon Air Ambulance Trust, Fundraising Director Caroline Creer said, We are always amazed at the ingenuity shown by the public in their support of the Trust. We are really grateful to Matt, Jo, Morris and Jack for participating in this fun initiative, which has raised such significant funds, and we are delighted that they have had such great support. We wish them all a fantastic evening at their Halloween party where they can proudly show off their new hair styles.
If you live in or around Tiverton and are a savvy bargain hunter, you will be delighted to learn that Devon Air Ambulance Trust is opening its 10th shop, and this one is in your town.

On Saturday 15th October, at 10.00am, Mayor Neal Davey will cut the ribbon and declare that the shop at 21-22 Market Walk is open for business. As well as the Mayor, an Air Ambulance paramedic will also be in attendance and willing to answer all your questions about their work. As with all Devon Air Ambulance Trust shops, there will be quality clothing, footwear and accessories, bric-a-brac and books.

It costs in the region of £4.5million to keep the two Devon Air Ambulances flying and the Trust relies entirely on donations from the public and the businesses of Devon as it receives no Government nor Lottery funding. Our shops not only offer a significant income stream, they are also a great way for us to engage with the public on a daily basis. If you are an ex-patient with a story to tell, or if you would be willing to volunteer a few hours a week to help in the Tiverton shop, or if you have goods to donate, please call in to the shop or telephone 01392 466666.

Do come along and see for yourself the range of goods that will be on offer. Gone are the days of the musty, dusty, old-fashioned second-hand tat “ these days shoppers can bag themselves designer labels, current fashions and kit out their homes, whilst donating to a worthwhile cause at the same time.
What does Art mean to you? Is it a landscape painting, or fruit in a bowl? Or is it an abstract sculpture, inspired textile and silk prints or beautiful hand crafted jewellry that ticks the box?

No matter what your taste, if you are interested in art, in any form, there will definitely be something to tease and tempt you in this years South Hams Art Forum (SHAF) Art Trail, running for nine days from Saturday 22nd to Sunday 30th October, offering more diverse art and more venues available than ever before. The trail is designed to lead visitors to discover not only the artists and their work, but also to explore the beautiful South Hams coastal area, including towns such as Dartmouth and Kingsbridge and villages such as Modbury, Newton Ferrers and Loddiswell “ ideal for locals and visitors alike. Donations are invited at each venue to raise funds for the BBC Radio Devon Air Ambulance Appeal, helping to reach a target of £600,000 to buy and equip a brand new helicopter.

Membership of SHAF is diverse with some artists working in purpose built studios while others produce fantastic work at the kitchen table in their home. A full-colour, informative brochure, outlining the work of all participating artists, is available free of charge giving details of opening times and directions for finding each venue. Brochures are available from Tourist Information Centres, libraries, shops, hotels and online at www.shaf.org.uk

Artists in SHAF have staged a number of trails over the past ten years. This year, however, SHAF has been supported and funded by the South Devon Coastal Local Action Group (including funding from the EU, Defra, SWRDA and LEADER) which has enabled the trail to develop significantly and now includes the works of over 50 artists.

For anyone looking for something a little different, Ham Farm at Loddiswell will be the venue for the photographic portraiture of Ejan Dalal Hahn; the hand-painted stoneware bowls and plates by Magda Weldon; individual sculpture and furniture by Carl Hahn and and the highly distinctive felt hats, coats and wall hangings by Peet Leather. Meanwhile, 16 Cromwell Park at Modbury will be the venue to meet and see the work of Jennifer Johnson, displaying her watercolours and pastels of animals, places and portraits.

If you would like inspiration for this years party season, whether its for a dinner & dance, a party with friends or your work Christmas do, then look no further than the Devon Air Ambulance Trust charity shop on Queen Street, Newton Abbot. On Thursday 13th October, from 6.00 “ 8.00pm, you are cordially invited to join members of staff and volunteers who will be displaying and modelling the wide range of party and evening wear.

The idea came about when Dawn Key, Manager of the shop, realised just how many beautiful pieces had been donated. When we came to sort the stock for a winter display, we were absolutely amazed! There are sparkly tops, sequinned dresses, evening trousers, accessories and shoes, jewellry and bags “ just about everything you could ask for. We have designer outfits, some bits for gents and even some partywear for children. We will also be selling a range of boxed Christmas gifts. We are so grateful to everyone who has donated these items to us and we want to do them justice. By hosting an event purely to promote our party and evening wear we can show whats available to its full advantage and, hopefully, solve a few wardrobe dilemmas into the bargain.

Chrissie Peel, Retail Manager for Devon Air Ambulance Trust, went on to say, We are always amazed at the quality and diversity of the party clothes we receive. They come in all colours and sizes and its clear that many items have only been worn once, if at all, and we always ensure that all are steam cleaned and suitable for sale. For anyone looking for that something a little different, theres a real chance that they can bag themselves a bargain in one of our shops. I applaud Dawn and her team for arranging their Party and Evening Wear Sale and would encourage anyone to go along and see whats there.
Anita Newcombe worked as Managing Editor of Devon Life magazine and four sister titles in the South West for over eight years. She now runs her own PR, marketing and training organisation, Anita Newcombe Media. Anita will serve as a Trustee of DAAT for a period of three years with a maximum term of six years.

Anita said, I have had links through Devon Life with Devon Air Ambulance for many years, running articles and news stories in the magazine and attending events. Now that I am managing my own business, I have the flexibility to do more and hope to offer plenty of support in my particular areas of expertise.

Devon is an extraordinary county, large and with a lengthy and sometimes inaccessible coastline. Im sure that were all glad to know that Devon Air Ambulance is there for us should we have an accident and need urgent assistance.

Not everyone realises Devon Air Ambulance Trust provides us with two helicopters without any sort of government funding. We should all support Devons iconic red helicopters and their amazing crews as much as we can.
