Samba celebrations on the Quay in Exeter

Added on: 6 May 2011

Fun and entertainment all the way in this celebration of Samba!

The warmth and colourful party atmosphere of Rio at carnival time will come to Exeter's Quayside on Saturday 14 May, when Street Heat celebrates its 20th birthday with a samba extravaganza, to raise funds for the BBC Radio Devon Air Ambulance Appeal.

The well-renowned Exeter-based percussion band will be playing on The Quay from 11.00 am in their vibrant costumes and they will be complemented by other samba bands from around the South West to join in the fun of a mass samba 'Bateria'.

Vice-Chairman of Street Heat, and member for 14 years, Nick Stephen, is looking forward to the day and explained, “People of all ages love samba, with its rhythmic beat and flamboyant costumes; you just can’t help tapping your feet.  Even a small samba band can make an awesome sound, but when you get a few bands playing together in a bateria, like they do in Brazil where the music originated, it can produce a sound unlike anything else in the world.  We hope that the many fans of Street Heat will come and help us celebrate our birthday and, at the same time, help us raise money for the Air Ambulance Appeal.”

Caroline Creer, Fundraising Director for Devon Air Ambulance Trust, added “This event will be such fun.  Samba bands always put smiles on faces and we are grateful to everyone who is joining in with the entertainment on the day.  With a variety of acts and performers, and a great choice of food outlets, why not come along and enjoy the fresh air, party atmosphere and free entertainment.”

The fun starts at 11.00 am and, like all good parties, it ends when it ends!
