Jill's Story

Added on: 7 September 2010

Jill and Jim were geocaching near Meldon Reservoir and Jill slipped and tumbled into a ravine and broke her ankle.  There was no mobile reception, so Jim climbed to a nearby hill top, and met some Scouts who called the ambulance.  The Air Ambulance was deployed.

Within 15 minutes the helicopter was on scene. Jill couldn't be moved, so additional help was called on from Okehampton Hospital, and a team of 6 paramedics eventually moved Jill safely, strapping her on a board, to get her out of the hard to reach gully.  She was flown to the RD&E Hospital, Exeter.

Two weeks later, Jill took her 3-day exams for her degree in Archaeology, at Exeter University, and had to sit with her leg on a stool.

Jill said 'The Devon Air Ambulance is a great team and we shall both be grateful to them always for their wonderful expertise.'

Note:
Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment.
