Fun for all the family at Braunton Village Fair

Added on: 23 May 2011

If you are wondering what to do and where to go next Bank Holiday Monday, then look no further than the Village Fair at Braunton in North Devon, where there will be fun and activities for all ages.  This traditional Fair has been organised by Rotary for over 30 years and was formerly a Fair & Carnival with procession.  This year’s event, at the Recreation Ground, Exeter Road, Braunton, is a joint venture with the newly formed "Rotary Club of Braunton Caen" and will be officially opened by Miss Lydia Cross at 12.30.

Local lass Lydia, now 10 years old, won a Pride of Britain Award for Child of Courage when she was just 6 years old and last year she received a Gold Blue Peter Badge for her fundraising efforts and Charity work.

Despite having had below knee double amputations following meningitis and HIB with septicaemia before she was even three years old and many further operations over the following years, Lydia has demonstrated amazing strength and courage and raised thousands of pounds for various charities, including Help For Heroes and Royal British Legion.  Lydia has also been awarded the Rotary Young Citizen of the Year Award at the Bournemouth International Conference Centre at the Rotary GB & I Annual Conference.

Activities planned for the afternoon’s entertainment at Braunton Village Fair include a Junior Obstacle Course; Mini Soccer Competitions with finals for the Under 9s and Under 10s; a Display Field Gun Race by Barnstaple Sea Cadets; Racing Ferrets and a Tug of War.  In addition to this, there will be a Fancy Dress competition supported by the Ilfracombe Victorian Group.

Funds raised at the event will be split between BBC Radio Devon’s Air Ambulance Appeal and Shelterbox. Whilst entry to the ground is free of charge, raffle tickets will be sold and donations for the aforementioned charities will be welcomed.  Refreshments will be available on the day and the Grand Draw will wrap up the proceedings at about 5.00pm.

Caroline Creer, Fundraising Director for Devon Air Ambulance Trust, said “These traditional Village Fairs are a lovely way to while away an afternoon.  We would like to thank Lydia Cross and Braunton Rotary Club and all the participants for their support of Devon Air Ambulance Trust.  I am sure that everyone who goes along will have a thoroughly enjoyable time.”
