Digging Deep for Charity Funded Air Ambulances
Contractors appointed for North Devon airbase

The Devon Air Ambulance Trust is delighted to announce that Exeter builders Rok have been appointed as contractors for their new North Devon based airbase at Eaglescott Airfield, Umberleigh.

The turf was cut in a small ceremony by Devon Air Ambulance Trust Trustee Jack Lomas, watched on by the on duty crew, together with some of the team working on the project.

Heléna Holt, Chief Executive of the Devon Air Ambulance Trust said ‘We are delighted to be working in partnership with Rok and very much look forward to seeing the airbase develop over the next few months.’

‘Of course none of this would be possible without the generous donation of a long lease on the land by Barry Pearson, owner of Eaglescott Airfield.   It’s an ideal location for the service, because with the other aircraft based in Exeter, it ensures that whatever helicopter attends a patient who is ill or injured, 50% of Devon can be reached within 5 minutes, with the remainder within 20 minutes.  That’s really reassuring.’

‘We are also looking forward to working with building supply company Burdens, to whom we would also like to add our thanks, who have pledged to give us the best value for money possible for many of the materials needed, working also with their suppliers.  Gifts in kind and reduced priced goods like this really do make a great deal of difference,  because the less we pay for items, the more  money goes straight into the fund to keep both helicopters airborne.’

The charity’s very own bear Ambrose met up with distant cousin Rokky for the first time and they will continue to entertain the junior members of the Trust over the duration of the project – keeping our younger supporters informed of key moments during the build.

Commercial Team Leader of the Build Team at Rok, Nigel Whelan said ‘Rok are delighted to be involved in creating a permanent home for the Devon Air Ambulance crew at Eaglescott Airfield in Umberleigh, North Devon.  It is an opportunity for everyone involved to create a landmark hangar and accommodation block for the future of service in the area”.
